the old Canal de la Infanta

In 2007, between August and September, we carried out the conservation and restoration work on a section of the old Canal de la Infanta, from the 19th century, located on Avenida Can Corts de Cornellà de Llobregat (Baix Llobregat). ).

The hydraulic assembly was in a rather poor state of conservation due to the diverse number of processes that had affected it over the years. On the one hand, the considerable amount of repairs he had made with very diverse materials had contributed significantly to the loss of his original reading. A number of external aggressions had contributed to the loss of original workmanship, particularly in the area of ??the filter structure, which had largely been deflected. Finally, the neglect of the site contributed to the proliferation of plants and the accumulation of dirt of various origins. With respect to the iron elements, their general condition was also very bad. The gate had its central body and structure supporting it in a very poor state of conservation, with significant losses of support and a very advanced state of corrosion. The structure of the filters had one of its ends fully interconnected due to significant mechanical stress, at the same time it was completely dirty due to the discharge of foreign material and had a small layer of corrosion of a global character. With respect to the filters themselves, these showed a state of generalized corrosion but accentuated especially at the lower end, with significant wear, breaks and timely losses, to be the area with the most contact with the course of the water in the canalization.

Our intervention

Due to the peculiarity of the complex, as well as its location within an urban space, the recovery and recovery works of the hydraulic assembly had to guarantee the correct conservation of the architectural remains and their original elements. Although it was not possible to recover the original use of the complex, the general proposal of conservation was based on recovering its original reading, respecting as much as possible its original materials, the construction system and all the elements that made up the hydraulic assembly.
